Chevy Cruze Hatchback Is A Step Forward

Set to hit U.S. showroom floors in the coming weeks, Wards Auto thinks the Chevy Cruze Hatchback is a smart and sporty step forward for the automaker.

Hatchback sales are on the rise in the states and it accounts for 10.6% of car sales in 2016, an increase compared to the 7.5% in 2011. With the increasing trend, Chevy is hoping to snag some of those sales for itself and the new Cruze hatchback is going to get their foot in the door.

For a base price of $22,190, buyers with active lifestyles will get 47.2 cu.-ft. (1,336 L) of cargo space with the second-row seats folded down and the 1.4L turbocharged gasoline 4-cylinder has enough power to ferry both cargo and passengers. It’s no hot hatch, but the Cruze is pretty good on fuel economy with a tested combined rating of 31.3 mpg (7.5 L/100 km) and an EPA-estimated 29/38 city-hwy (5.9-6.4 L/100 km) sticker rating.

To make the Chevy Cruze hatch a bit sportier, GM will soon offer factory performance exhaust and air-intake upgrades which can add an extra 10hp to the Cruze’s own 153 hp, but the torque will remain at 177 lb.-ft.

Chevy’s C-segment hatchback could appeal to the trendy customers who can put down a bit more than average for a new vehicle. If that same demographic wants a bit more power in a similar body, maybe Chevy will deliver with an SS variant.
