Cruze Hatchback Spied

Due to arrive at dealerships late next month, a silver Chevrolet Cruze hatchback was spotted last week in Detroit getting some final production model testing in.

The Cruze hatchback will feature a 153 horsepower, 1.4-liter turbo four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual or automatic transmission will be sending a maximum 177 lb-ft of torque to its wheels. While hatchback may cost more than its sedan sibling ($1495 more than a manual LT sedan), owners will get more storage space and a sleeker design for just $22,190. That’s 47.2 cubic feet of cargo space if the second row is down.

If someone wants their Cruze to look like the orange one on Chevrolet's home site, they'll have to add a few options which increase the MSRP to $26,210.

Although official fuel economy numbers have not yet been released, we can probably expect to see it earn an around 40mpg on the highway like the sedan which would put the hatch on par with its rivals like the Ford Focus or Elantra GT. The automaker had to balance fuel economy and power so the hatch will only have a top speed of 125 mph but then again, this model isn’t exactly a hot hatch so that’s to be expected.

Maybe a SS variant will follow in the future if the regular Cruze hatchback sells well globally.

I can't imagine why the Cruze hatchback won't sell. The hatchback market is hot right now even if the model isn't performance orientated, that's why so many manufacturers are coming out with their own. Just hope Chevy sees the merits of coming out with their own hot hatch soon because the fishes in that pond is constantly increasing.

Civic Type R being one of them.

The hot hatch market is real big right now. But the hatch market itself is also big, just obviously not generating a lot of media buzz because everyone wants to talk about the much faster variants. People are still buying a heck of a lot of regular hatchbacks which is why this would be great

Not a bad look but what's funny is it reminds me of the Hyundai Elantra GT. The tables have turned, now a Chevy looks like a Hyundai, or better yet... who stole from who?

That's always the question but I guess it really doesn't matter. Main thing is they have something to compete in this market now, and it has the potential to open up different variants to be a competitor in the sub-sections of the segment

No doubt. In the end it depends on how good of a product it is and I have a feeling overall consumers will accept this more than the Kia. Plus with a lot of shared parts with models like this, there's less of a chance we'll experience problems with it.

I feel that way as well. Kia has come a long way but has no where near the history that Chevy does. For that solely, people will swarm this over the latter.

Kia is known for their Soul, not much else as far as I'm concerned whereas Chevy is an all rounder that people know of.

Kia can win on other fronts, pricing and how people pay can be an advantage, so maybe... best financing in the industry, etc.

Too bad we won't be seeing the L and LS trim levels, those are the price leading trims so the hatchback won't be priced under $20k.
